Rules Post 2011

heroines_fest is a fest designed to produce more fanworks featuring female characters from comics.

This is the third year for Heroines Fest. Traditionally, the fest has been held on Livejournal, but with issues the site is having this year, we are holding a back-up on Dreamwidth. Prompts and claims can be submitted on either site, and you can post to either site. At the end of the fest, your mod will post a masterlist to both sites linking all of the fanworks that have been produced during the period.

What's Allowed:

  • Fanworks based on Marvel, DC, Indie and Webcomics

  • Fanworks based on tie-in media based on comics. This includes comic book movies, tv shows and cartoons. (this rule has been changed since last year.) The only exception to this is Smallville.

  • Crossovers are welcome and encouraged, as long as your primary character is a female from comics or a comics related property.

  • Acceptable fanworks for the fest include fanfic, fanart and vids. Fic should be at least 800 words and fanart and vids should be of comparable length and effort.

What's Not Allowed:

  • Fanworks based exclusively on Smallville.
  • Fanworks based exclusively on properties which were successful in other media before becoming comics.  (i.e., Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, etc.)

About Prompts:

  • As for the prompts themselves, as long as the character in question self-identifies as female in canon, the prompt will qualify for the fest.

  • About genderswap: The purpose of this fest is to produce more works for canon female characters. Genderswap does not accomplish that goal and is not permitted during the fest. This includes canon genderswap universes, such as the Earth where there is female Bruce Wayne and the Earth where Tony Stark was a woman. There is already a lot of really great fic and art produced for canonically male characters - this is not the fest to produce more fanworks about them or their experiences.

  • All varieties of fanworks are welcome. This means gen/friendships/het/slash/femslash/happy/miserable/alternate universes/crack/etc. Canon ships are acceptable, and so are non-canon ships and so are no ships.

  • Prompts shouldn't be racist/homophobic/biphobic/sexist/transphobic, and shouldn't bash characters (male or female) or pairings, creators or publishers.

  • The focus should be on the female character(s). Background m/m slash is fine, but the focus should be on the female character and her experiences. Fics about a female character reacting to the relationships between male slash pairings are really not the point of this fest.

About Claims:

  • Each prompt can be claimed twice. You can claim up to 3 prompts.

  • Posting to the community can be done any time between October 7 and October 21. You do not have to claim a date.

About Posting:

  • Although fic and art can be posted wherever you like: your LJ, your Dreamwidth, AO3, directly to the community, etc., at least a link/fake cut most be posted to the community linking us to your fic. Crosspost at will.

  • Please include a title, a rating and the characters of your fanwork at a minimum in the header of your post.

  • Wherever you post your fic or art must be open to the public in order to participate in heroines_fest.

  • Either a warning for triggering content or a general "do not warn" warning must be used.

About the Schedule:

August 7: Prompting starts
August 26: Prompting closes
August 28: Claiming Begins

I have some Legion of Super-Heroes prompts and I would like to know the best way to format them to indicate the version.

I was thinking like this: DCU, version, character, prompt
For example: DCU, Post-Zero Hour Legion, Jenni Ognats, meeting her relatives
Or: DCU, Pre-Crisis Legion, Ayla Ranzz/Salu Digby, first kiss

But what would be easiest for you?

It would be easiest if the version was indicated in the prompt section. So it would be DCU, character, version & prompt.

For ex:

DCU, Jenni Ognats, Post-Zero Hour Legion, Meeting her relatives.

DCU, Ayla Ranzz/Salu Digby, Pre-Crisis Legion, first kiss.

That keeps everything uniform for us. :)

The only exception would be the Reboot after September verse, which you can simple indicate with a DCnU instead of DCU.

Makes sense. Good thing I checked!

Can we claim our own prompts if we like? Does it matter, or....?
